Gospel Reflections #1082: Failure is the foundation of growth

2 Samuel 11:2 ‘One evening, after his afternoon rest, David got up and went for a walk on the roof of the palace. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing; she was exceptionally beautiful.’

This scripture depicts the decisive moment that marked the beginning of King David’s downfall into the ‘sins of adultery and murder’, despite his seemingly flawless character.

One evening, whilst strolling on the roof terrace, David witnessed a beautiful woman bathing.

This act of ‘seeing’ led to the disastrous choices that followed.

It was the season when the king should have been on the battlefield, but David had left the war in the hands of his subordinates and remained at the royal palace in Jerusalem.

Perhaps it was his carelessness—having slept until late afternoon—that gave rise to temptation.

It is not a sin to happen to catch a glimpse of something, but David did not look away; he continued to watch.

The visual stimulus transformed into sexual desire within his heart.

This is a human frailty shared with Eve’s temptation in Genesis (when she saw the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil).

The roof of the palace was situated high up, overlooking the entire city.

This elevated position symbolised David’s absolute power.

He would subsequently use this power to summon the married woman to the palace.

This is a realistic biblical portrayal of human nature, showing that even David—who was so deeply loved by God and so devout—could fall into sin in an instant due to a ‘momentary lapse’ and ‘temptation through the eyes’. By depicting the failures of heroes without concealment, the Bible constantly warns us against pride and teaches us the importance of keeping our distance from temptation.

We, too, are unconsciously influenced by what we see, hear and touch.

By justifying our actions—thinking ‘it’s only a little’ or ‘it’s just this once’—we open the door of our hearts to Satan.

Yet God is always at work within us, inviting us to return to Him at any time.

Failure is the foundation of growth.
