Gospel Reflections #1078: The Horn of Salvation

2 Samuel 22:2–3 ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; my Saviour. You save me from violence.’

This is a hymn in which King David, at the end of his life, looked back on his life’s journey and confessed his gratitude and trust in God, who had delivered him from all his enemies and from King Saul.

These two verses are packed with concrete imagery representing God’s protection.

They are based on David’s real-life experiences whilst living as a fugitive in the wilderness.

Rock: A solid foundation that never moves, and a safe place to hide from the enemy’s attacks.

Fortress, high tower: Refers to a stronghold built on high ground.

It signifies an area of absolute safety from which one can look down on the enemy and remain out of reach of their attacks. Refuge: A safe space into which one can flee at any time when cornered.

Shield: A close protector that directly defends against the arrows and swords hurled by the enemy.

Horn of Salvation: In the Bible, the ‘horn’ is a symbol of strength and victory.

It signifies that God will defeat the enemy with overwhelming power and bring about victory.

David is not merely saying, ‘God is strong’; he repeatedly calls Him ‘my Rock’ and ‘my Fortress’.

This is a confession that God is not merely a Saviour in the abstract, but a personal being who knows David’s individual suffering and engages with him on a one-to-one basis.

David experienced many forms of ‘oppression’, such as his life-threatening flight from King Saul and the rebellion of his son Absalom.

However, underlying this song is the conviction that God delivered him from all of these trials.

These words teach us today that when we face life’s storms and difficulties—such as relationship troubles, anxiety or illness—God is the ‘refuge’ to which we should flee first and foremost.

Through observing God from various perspectives and in different circumstances throughout his life, speaking to Him and experiencing His grace, David built up a firm conviction of trust in God and came to know a joy sufficient to offer Him praise.

Such experiences await us too.

To this end, we must continually converse with God every day, place our complete trust in Him, and joyfully obey Him.

Our relationship with God cannot be automatically renewed.

It is the result of our repeated daily expressions of our will.
