2 Samuel 10:15 ‘When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they rallied together’
This passage depicts the moment when the Arameans, having once been defeated by David’s army, regrouped and rallied together to face Israel once more.
As the Aramean army was supposed to be stronger than the Israeli army, it was utterly unacceptable for them to flee the battlefield in disarray.
Until then, the Aramean army had merely participated in battles as hired reinforcements, but now they were determined to fight to regain their lost prestige.
David faced the greatest crisis of his reign; a nationwide mobilisation was ordered, and David himself took to the battlefield.
And, by God’s blessing, David’s forces defeated the Arameans, who subsequently became a vassal state of Israel.
The Ammonites had allied themselves with the Arameans in search of strength, but David relied on the power of God.
That was the decisive difference.
This passage can be seen as a symbol of ‘human beings relying on their own strength and stubbornly continuing to oppose God’s anointed king’.
Although the Arameans united to mount a counter-attack, they ultimately suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the army led by David himself and were forced into complete submission.
Verse 15 marks a tense turning point on the eve of the decisive battle, illustrating a theme found throughout the Bible: ‘No matter how united people may be in their resistance to God’s plan, they will ultimately crumble.’
Even in the small battles of our daily lives, the difference becomes apparent depending on whether we rely on ourselves or on God.
It may not be as visible as David’s victory, but our victory lies in the peace and assurance that God is certainly with us.
Let us put our faith into full effect in our daily lives.
