Gospel Reflections #1075: This is victory!

Psalm 20:6 ‘Now I know that the Lord grants victory to his Anointed One; from his holy heaven he answers him, and with his right hand he grants the power of salvation.’

This is a crucial passage marking a major shift towards ‘absolute certainty and faith’ that God will surely grant victory to the king as he faces battle.

The first half of Psalm 20 (verses 1–5) was a ‘prayer of intercession’ in which the people and the priests prayed, ‘May the Lord answer you,’ on behalf of the king (David) who was about to go into battle.

However, the moment we reach verse 6, the subject shifts to the singular—‘Now I know’—and the text undergoes a dramatic transformation into a ‘declaration of certainty’ that the prayer has been answered.

This conviction has been built up through countless experiences of God delivering us from innumerable difficulties and trials in the past, as well as through countless prayers.

If we trust in God, He will accomplish great things through us and for us.

By trusting in God, we are made anointed ones; and by calling and using us, He reveals His work.

 When we face the ‘battles’ and ‘trials’ of life, as we pray desperately to God for help, the Holy Spirit grants us an inner peace and assurance that ‘God has already heard us’ and ‘God is with us’.

This is victory. 

We must remember that it is not by relying on human resources or strategies, but by ‘trusting in God’ that we find the true path to victory.
