Psalm 66:1 ‘Shout for joy to God, all the earth.’

Psalm 66 is a song of thanksgiving for deliverance from adversity; it is a call to praise on a grand scale, inviting not only the chosen people of Israel but all people throughout the world (the whole earth) to rejoice and extol God’s mighty deeds.

In the Old Testament, calls to worship God are usually directed at the people of Israel.

Here, however, the address is ‘the whole earth’ (every person and every creature on the earth).

This demonstrates that God’s salvation and sovereignty extend not merely to one nation, but to the entire world.

The phrase ‘shout of joy’ used here does not refer to quiet prayer, but to fervent, emotionally stirring praise—much like the jubilant cheers with which a victorious king is welcomed.

From verse 2 onwards, the text recounts how God turned the sea into dry land to deliver His people (the miracle of the Exodus) and how He led them out of suffering (such as exile) to a land of abundance.

It is precisely because of these great acts of salvation in the past that this cry of joy arises.

Our God has a plan not only for each individual but also on a cosmic scale, and He guides and brings that plan to fulfilment without the slightest deviation.

That God is our God.

God has a great plan for us too.

When we experience this, we will express our gratitude and joy even more boldly than we do now, and we will speak of and praise God even more and more.
