Gospel Reflections #1069: Even when we understand nothing and have no certainty whatsoever

Psalm 60:11, 12 ‘Grant us help against our enemies, for human help is in vain. It is by God that we act with courage, for it is God who tramples our enemies underfoot.’

This was written by David in the midst of the battle against the Edomites and is an important prayer of faith that teaches us to ‘acknowledge human helplessness and place our trust solely in God’s absolute power’.

Although Israel had defeated the Philistines, the Arameans and the Moabites, the Edomites proved to be a tougher opponent than expected, and it seems they faced a hard-fought battle.

Although God had promised to defeat Israel’s enemies, the situation before them offered no sign whatsoever of that promise being fulfilled.

However, finding himself in a desperate situation, David ceased to rely on human strategies and prayed, clinging solely to God’s promise of victory.

As it says, ‘Through God we fight bravely’, this demonstrates not merely waiting for a miracle, but the courage to take a step forward in trust in God.

We should cry out to God, asking Him to enable us to trust Him at all times, and to choose His side even when we understand nothing and have no certainty whatsoever.

God is a God who does not necessarily answer our heartfelt cries.
