Psalm 124:7–8 ‘Like a bird escaping from a snare, so our souls have escaped. The snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.’

This passage expresses joy and gratitude for having been miraculously rescued through God’s intervention from overwhelming despair and a crisis beyond human strength, as well as a confession of absolute trust in God.

This psalm is known as one of the ‘Songs of Ascent’, sung by pilgrims on their way to the Temple in Jerusalem.

Here, the ‘bird’ refers to helpless human beings or the people of Israel, whilst the ‘hunter’s net’ symbolises the enemy’s inescapable schemes and traps, or desperate calamities.

It is impossible for a bird to break free from a net by its own strength.

This signifies that the people did not escape by their own efforts, but that the trap itself was destroyed by God’s supernatural power.

It expresses the astonishment and sense of liberation at a way out opening up in an unexpected manner from a situation that, to human eyes, seemed ‘doomed’.

The psalmist asserts that it was not chance nor human wisdom that saved them, but ‘the Lord’.

By praising the Saviour as the ‘Creator of all things’, the poet emphasises that God’s power is far greater than that of human enemies or any earthly authority.

When we are bound by life’s snares and difficulties—such as relationships, illness or financial crises—and feel powerless to act on our own, God gives us the hope that He will break those snares for us.

The source of our help lies not in the small circumstances before our eyes, but in the almighty God who created the world.

Therefore, rather than being overwhelmed by our circumstances, we place our trust in God’s greatness.

We, too, have experienced God’s work in this way.

When we take the time to reflect on our own lives, we will surely realise the greatness of God’s work.
