Gospel Reflections #1065: Everything Promised in Jesus

Psalm 110:1 ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’

This is the most frequently quoted passage from the Old Testament in the New Testament, and it is a crucial scripture prophesying the divinity, victory and absolute authority of Jesus Christ, the Messiah (Saviour).

The word ‘Lord’ appears twice in this verse, but in the original Hebrew text, different words are used, each with a distinct meaning.

The first ‘Lord’ is the Hebrew ‘Yahweh’, which refers to God the Father (the Creator).

The second ‘Lord’ is the Hebrew ‘Adonai’, which refers to the One whom King David calls ‘Lord’—namely, the Son, Jesus Christ.

In other words, it means ‘God the Father spoke these words to Christ’.

In the ancient Near East, the ‘seat at the right hand’ of a king was a place symbolising the highest honour, authority and equal dominion.

This prophesies ‘Christ’s Ascension and Victory’—that Jesus Christ rose from the dead after His crucifixion, ascended into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God.

The term ‘footstool’ derives from an ancient victory ritual in which a victorious king would trample the heads of his subdued enemies underfoot.

This is an expression promising that Christ will ultimately and completely dominate and triumph over Satan, the power of death, and all hostile forces.

When Satan tempted Adam and Eve to sin, God immediately declared war on Satan and proclaimed His victory.

And here, God the Father promises victory to Jesus.

God is faithful and unchanging.

God’s declaration is about to be fulfilled.

At that time, we shall be filled with joy upon realising that the God in whom we have always believed and for whom we have long waited is indeed exactly as He has revealed Himself to be.
