Gospel Reflections #1064: Not through his own achievements or strength

2 Samuel 7:18 ‘King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, “O Lord God, why have you brought me and my house to this point?”’

This is a significant passage depicting the moment when King David, having received overwhelming grace from God, sat before Him with deep humility and gratitude and began to pray. 

David longed to build a magnificent temple for God.

However, through the prophet Nathan, God made a promise that surpassed human imagination: ‘It is not you who will build a house (temple) for me; rather, I will build a house for you and establish the throne of your descendants forever.’

This verse 18 is David’s very first response immediately after hearing that magnificent promise. 

David went into the Tabernacle, where the Ark of the Covenant was kept, and ‘sat down’ before God.

Whilst the Bible often describes prayer as involving ‘standing’ or ‘prostrating oneself’, the fact that he ‘sat down’ here indicates that, in the face of God’s overwhelming grace, he was left speechless, overcome by a shock so profound it left him paralysed, whilst at the same time immersed in a deep sense of intimacy. 

David was a man who had been raised from a mere shepherd to a king.

He fully understood that he had not reached this position through his own achievements or strength.

When one encounters God’s greatness, one becomes truly aware of one’s own smallness, and one’s arrogance is shattered.

David looks back on his journey thus far—through his life-threatening flight from King Saul and numerous battles—realising that God had always protected him and brought him to his present throne. These words encapsulate a profound trust in God’s sovereignty and gratitude, rooted in the conviction that ‘all is the result of God’s grace’. 

Like David, it is the very essence of our faith to be filled with wonder, asking, ‘Why should someone like me receive such grace?’

If we lose this sense of wonder, we mistake grace for something to be taken for granted (a privilege) and become arrogant.

 Although David’s wish to ‘build a temple’ was denied, God offered him something even greater: ‘eternal blessing’.

Even when our wishes do not go as we hope, God has a far more wonderful plan in store for us.

We, too, are being led through experiences similar to David’s.

May this be a day in which we experience God’s greatness.
