Gospel Reflections #1061: Discernment to see the motives of the heart

Psalm 26:1–2 “‘O Lord, I long for your judgement. I have walked in integrity; I have trusted in the Lord and have never wavered. O Lord, examine me and test me; try my heart and my mind with fire.’”

This is a scene in which David, faced with false accusations and blame, pleads his innocence before God and confesses his complete trust in Him.

It is believed that David was facing unjust criticism and false accusations from those around him.

Rather than relying on imperfect human judgement, he makes a desperate plea to God—the absolute Judge who sees all things—saying, ‘Defend me (judge me)’.

The terms ‘integrity’ and ‘wholeness’ used here do not mean that David ‘had never sinned once in his life’.

Rather, they refer to his attitude of faith (loyalty)—that he had ‘consistently sought to obey God’s teachings with pure motives’, without being led astray by the wicked people around him.

In verse 2, he voluntarily subjects himself to God’s rigorous examination using the following three strong terms:

Examine: A check of superficial behaviour.

Testing: Testing the strength of one’s faith.

Trial: As metal is refined in a furnace, having the very depths of one’s heart (one’s true feelings and motives) examined to see if there are any impurities.

This is a prayer based on an overwhelming relationship of trust, affirming that there is absolutely no evil motive within his heart that would betray God.

When we face difficulties or misunderstandings, we tend to make excuses based on our own strength or to attack the other person in return.

However, David teaches us the true attitude of faith: ‘not to be swayed by human judgement, but to walk before God with pure motives of which we are never ashamed, and to entrust everything into God’s hands’.

If we do not keep our eyes fixed on God, we will sink into the quagmire of this world.

Like David, let us confess to God our desire to keep our eyes firmly fixed on Him alone, and ask Him to lead us along His path.
