Gospel Reflections #1060: Not a Mere Moral Checklist

Psalm 15:5 ‘He who does not lend money at interest, nor take a bribe against the innocent. Those who do these things shall never be moved.’

This is an extremely important scripture that concludes by declaring the specific social ethics of ‘those who are worthy to stand before God (those who please God)’, as well as the blessing they receive (an unshakeable conviction).

Psalm 15 as a whole takes the form of a ‘rite of entry’ (criteria for entering the temple), listing the necessary conditions in response to the question: ‘What sort of person may dwell in God’s tabernacle and reside on the holy mountain?’

The first half of verse 5 emphasises ‘not exploiting the weak’, particularly in social life where money and power are involved.

The Law forbade charging interest when lending money to the needy among God’s own people (fellow countrymen).

This was because, in those days, borrowing money was not a business investment but something undertaken by people facing a ‘life-threatening crisis’, struggling even to find food for the next day.

The teaching here signifies the practice of ‘God’s mercy’—that is, not taking unfair advantage of others’ misfortune or hardship to gain undue profit, nor exploiting one’s fellow countrymen.

Furthermore, it calls for thorough integrity and fairness in court proceedings and public matters, ensuring that justice is not perverted by money (bribes) and that the socially vulnerable or the innocent are not wronged.

This is the concluding statement of the second half of verse 5, and indeed of the entire Psalm 15.

‘Unshakable’ signifies absolute spiritual stability: God firmly sustains that person’s life, ensuring they will never be destroyed, even when facing the storms and hardships of life or the attacks of the wicked.

The standard set by Psalm 15 is extremely high, and it is difficult to fulfil it perfectly through human effort alone.

Therefore, this psalm is not merely a moral checklist; rather, it calls for ‘a sincere attitude of reverence for God, seeking to reflect His mercy and justice in one’s way of life’.

From the perspective of the New Testament, Jesus Christ alone fully met this standard; this is a profound teaching that leads to the promise of salvation—that those who believe in Christ are, by God’s grace, placed upon an ‘unshakable foundation’.

I believe that those who have experienced God’s love and mercy in abundance come to know the joy that is found in Him.

This is not ‘righteousness by works’, but ‘righteousness by faith’.

It is by trusting in God more, relying on Him more, and allowing Him to give us rest that we come to shine as His light.
