Gospel Reflections #1055: A Life that Richly Blesses Others

Psalm 92:12‘The righteous will flourish like the palm tree; they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.’

This is a symbolic passage promising that the lives of the righteous who follow God will flourish vigorously, even in harsh circumstances, and be filled with eternal blessings.

Looking at Psalm 92 as a whole, the wicked who rebel against God are likened to ‘grass of the field’.

At first glance, grass appears to grow lush and green rapidly, but it withers in an instant under the scorching sun and hot winds. On the other hand, the ‘righteous’ who obey God are likened to sturdy trees with deep roots, signifying enduring prosperity and stability that are not swayed by immediate circumstances.

The date palm draws water from deep underground to grow lush and green, even in arid wilderness or oases. This represents the ability to survive and draw life from the source—God—despite life’s trials and spiritual thirst.

Furthermore, it bears an abundance of sweet fruit, which serves as a precious source of food for people.

This is a symbol of a life that richly blesses those around us and continues to bear fruit throughout one’s lifetime.

The Lebanese cedar is a massive conifer that can grow to a height of over 30 metres and live for up to a thousand years. Its majestic form symbolises the ‘strength and certainty of faith’ that never yields to the temptations of evil or the storms of life.

Furthermore, as this wood was used as the finest building material for the Temple, it demonstrates just how precious and valuable a person is in God’s eyes.

God nourishes and nurtures us.

By believing this, accepting it, and spending each day with God, we are transformed into unshakeable, mighty trees.

Rather than pursuing the fleeting successes of this world (the grass of the wicked), we who live in a right relationship with God (being planted in the Lord’s house) receive constant encouragement from Him: even as we grow older and our bodies decline, the inner life of the Spirit will continue to shine vibrantly, enabling us to bear abundant fruit for all time.
