Gospel Reflections #1052: Solely in God

2 Samuel 6:14 ‘David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a linen ephod.’

This is one of the most famous scenes in the Bible, depicting King David’s ‘utter devotion and humility’ as he poured out his whole being—body and soul—before God, expressing heartfelt joy and reverence.

At that time, David was the ‘King’, the supreme ruler of Israel.

Yet he cast aside the resplendent royal robes he ought to have worn and donned a ‘linen ephod’.

A linen ephod is a very simple garment, akin to undergarments, worn primarily by priests serving in the Temple and by the young Samuel.

This signifies David’s profound humility, expressing: ‘I may be a king among men, but before the Lord, who is the true King, I am but a powerless servant.’

The phrase ‘danced with all his might’ means that David, without the slightest concern for the eyes of others or appearances, leapt about so vigorously that his clothes became dishevelled as he gave vent to his joy. In doing so, he expressed with his whole being just how great a blessing it was to have welcomed the ‘Ark of the Covenant’—a symbol of God’s presence—to Jerusalem, having overcome his previous failure.

This demonstrates not a formal and lukewarm worship, but ‘an attitude of worship that rejoices in God from the depths of the soul and praises Him with fervour’.

This passage challenges us, when we stand before God, to ask ourselves: ‘Am I putting on a front to impress others?’ or ‘Have I adopted a cold, perfunctory attitude?’

It is a beautiful passage that teaches us the importance of, like David, casting aside our pride, giving heartfelt thanks for the grace bestowed upon us, and rejoicing with our whole being.

When we express our joy in God, the issue is not the method of expression, but whether we are truly rejoicing in Him from the bottom of our hearts.

Just as David did—having experienced failure, been given a second chance, and then accepted by God—the emotion and joy felt in that moment cannot be expressed merely through limited forms.

Perhaps our true joy lies solely in facing God, wrestling with Him, and choosing to accept and obey His will.

May we experience that joy today.
