Gospel Reflections #1047: The joy that is found in God.

Psalm 48:1–2 ‘The Lord is a great God, to be greatly praised in the city of our God, on his holy mountain. Mount Zion, lofty and beautiful, the joy of the whole earth, is the city of the great King.’

This is a song filled with joy, celebrating the Lord’s care for Jerusalem and the deliverance of His people from the hands of their enemies.

Jerusalem was the capital of Israel, but for David—and indeed for the nation—it held a special place in their hearts as the future centre of worship.

David begins by proclaiming ‘greatness’, which is the very essence of God.

God is a being of such greatness that He transcends human understanding, and He is worthy of the highest praise.

In the Christian faith, this ‘Zion, the city of God’ is interpreted as a prototype (symbol) of the modern ‘Church’ (the community of those who believe in Jesus Christ) or the ‘Heavenly Jerusalem’ (the Kingdom of God) that will be completed in the future.

The Church and its believers are entrusted with the role of becoming the ‘joy of the whole earth’, conveying God’s splendour and joy to those around them in this dark world.

We are called to manifest the joy of being with God in this world.

The first step we take in standing up for God is to share our personal stories of what Jesus has done for each of us individually; in this way, everyone can share in Jesus, and everyone can be filled with the joy that is found in God.
