Psalm 144:5–6 ‘O Lord, let the heavens pour down; let the mountains be covered with smoke. Let the lightning flash and the thunder roar.’

This is a powerful scene of prayer in which David, facing the threat of his enemies, earnestly pleads with God—who possesses overwhelming power—to ‘move the heavens and come down to save him immediately’.

David is asking God not merely to watch over him from afar, but to tear open the boundaries of heaven and intervene on earth in a visible manner.

Verses 3–4 immediately preceding this passage sing of human helplessness, asking, ‘Why does God take notice of a mere breath, a human being like a fleeting shadow?’

The fact that verses 5–6 follow immediately after this serves to further emphasise the absolute trust and supplication expressed: ‘Human beings are far too weak to overcome their enemies by their own strength; that is precisely why the power of the almighty God, who shakes heaven and earth, is necessary.’

For modern believers, this passage teaches the attitude of ‘entrusting everything to the almighty God and praying for His mighty intervention when facing the storms of life or difficulties we cannot cope with on our own’.

Ellen G. White cites this passage as a description of the collapse of the earth at the Second Coming, but we are led to acknowledge before God that neither ‘salvation’ nor any ‘battle’ on earth can be achieved by our own strength, and to seek His help.

To this end, we must first come to know what kind of God He is in our daily lives.

God is working in us in every possible way to reclaim us and live with us.

It is not because we do good deeds, nor because we have achieved great things in this world, but solely because of God’s love for us that He engages with us, healing us, helping us, guiding us and granting us peace.

We cannot help but rely on such a God.

God delights in our bold reliance on Him.
