Psalm 144:1 “‘Praise the Lord, my Rock, who teaches my hands to fight and my fingers to wage war.’”

This scripture declares that, in the face of real-life difficulties and spiritual battles, God is the ultimate refuge (the Rock) for believers, and the One who grants us the wisdom and strength to persevere.

In the Bible, the ‘rock’ symbolises absolute stability, protection and reliability that never waver. David confesses that it is God, and not his own wisdom or royal authority, who is his ultimate place of safety (fortress).

Furthermore, it is expressed that God does not simply remove believers from difficulties, but ‘trains their hands and makes their fingers dexterous’ through real-life battles so that they may overcome trials.

And although David won many battles, he expressed a humble faith, stating, ‘It was not by the skill of my sword that I won, but because God taught me how to fight and granted me victory.’

In modern Christian faith, this ‘battle’ is not a physical war, but a struggle against invisible evil forces and the temptations and sins within our own hearts.

Through the various events of daily life, we are compelled to choose whether to rely on ourselves or on God.

When we seek to see not only what lies before us, but also God’s intentions for us behind those events, God reveals to us a rock that serves as a fortress, as well as the wisdom and means to overcome—even if we cannot yet fully grasp them.

When we realise this, we are made keenly aware of how self-centred we are, yet at the same time, we discover a God who pours out His unchanging love upon us regardless.
