Gospel Reflections #1043: When familiarity give us a sense of security

2 Samuel 5:23 “When David sought the Lord’s guidance, He replied, ‘Do not go up to attack them; instead, go round behind them and face the enemy from the opposite side of the balsam thicket.’

This passage teaches us the importance of ‘not relying on past successes, but seeking God’s specific guidance (strategy) each time’ when King David went to battle once again against his arch-enemy, the Philistines.

In the previous battle (verse 19 of chapter 5), David was told by God to ‘go up’, and he achieved a great victory by breaking through head-on.

When the same Philistines attacked again, one would naturally be inclined to think, ‘We can win using the same method as last time.’

However, David did not over-rely on his own experience or intuition; instead, he prayed to the Lord once more and sought His guidance.

This demonstrates David’s humble attitude, never forgetting his dependence on God.

God’s answer was a strategy completely opposite to the previous one: ‘Do not attack head-on; go round to the rear.’ God gave him a specific tactic: to hide behind the ‘balsam thickets’ and take the enemy by surprise.

We see that faith is not merely blind momentum, but obedience to the specific wisdom and timing that God provides.

Moving on to the next verse (verse 24), God commanded, ‘When you hear the sound of the trees rustling in the wind (the sound of marching), then move.’ This was to demonstrate, through sound, the spiritual reality that ‘God’s army goes out before us to fight’ before we engage in battle. David’s role was simply to ride the wave of victory that God had created, in perfect timing.

For us too, a method that worked once in life does not necessarily work for the next problem.

It is important not to settle for ‘business as usual’, but to seek God’s fresh guidance for each day’s challenges.

Furthermore, rather than acting out of our own impatience, we need the stillness to listen carefully for the ‘sign’ (the sound of the balsam tree) that God uses to move the situation.

While familiarity may give us a sense of security, spiritually speaking, it may be a situation where we no longer need God.

We should seek to deepen our relationship with God by speaking to Him about even the smallest things and the things we do every day, and by listening for His response.
