Gospel Reflections #1041: The Ultimate Success

2 Samuel 5:7 ‘But David captured the stronghold of Zion. This is the City of David.’

This is a significant scripture that marks a historic and spiritual turning point, when King David conquered the impregnable ‘stronghold of Zion (Jerusalem)’ and took the first step towards establishing it as the City of God and the capital of His kingdom.

In the battle against the arrogant Jebusites, the indigenous people living in Jerusalem (Zion) were overconfident because the terrain served as a natural fortress.

They fiercely taunted David, saying, ‘Even a blind or lame man could easily drive you out,’ convinced that his invasion was absolutely impossible.

However, the phrase ‘But David…’ in verse 7 represents God’s overwhelming victory, which overturns human pride and expectations.

David launched a surprise attack through the ‘water-drawing tunnel’ (an underground waterway) whilst the enemy was off guard, and brilliantly captured this stronghold.

As a result of this victory, the stronghold of Zion came to be known as ‘the City of David’.

David’s occupation of this site was a highly astute strategic move, both politically and geographically.

Jerusalem was situated on the border, belonging to neither the northern tribes (Israel) nor the southern tribes (Judah).

Consequently, it was the ideal location to serve as a central hub (capital) to unify the entire nation, avoiding jealousy and conflict between the tribes.

Furthermore, it was a mountain fortress surrounded on three sides by deep valleys, making it a stronghold of exceptional military defences.

It is from here that the history of ‘God’s City, Jerusalem’, extending all the way to the New Heaven and New Earth, officially begins.

This demonstrates God’s sovereignty and faithfulness: even in a situation that appeared impossible to human eyes (as boasted by the Jebusites), victory was granted to the anointed king chosen by God (David).

This is not merely a record of the conquest of a single region.

It is a passage that stands as a glorious monument in the history of biblical salvation, where human pride was crushed, God’s promised King united all Israel as an anointed leader, and established the holy city where God’s name would dwell.

God reveals His character within the realities of human endeavour. In every situation, He reveals to us who He is.

The ultimate success in life does not come from human strength or wisdom, but from the Spirit of the Lord.
