Gospel Reflections #1032: Within our relationship with Him

2 Samuel 2:17 ‘On that day the fighting was fierce, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by David’s men.’

This passage depicts the decisive moment when the civil strife within the Kingdom of Israel following Saul’s death—the conflict between the faction of David and that of the House of Saul—escalated into a full-scale war.

After King Saul’s death in battle, the tribe of Judah anointed David as king.

Meanwhile, Abner, a general in Saul’s army, supported Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth, causing the nation to split into two.

The two armies faced off by the pool of Gibeon.

Initially, to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, a ‘duel’ (a form of combat) was held between twelve representatives chosen from each camp; however, this ended in a horrific outcome, with both sides killing each other and suffering total annihilation.

As the duel failed to bring about reconciliation or settle the outcome, the emotions of both armies erupted all at once.

This demonstrates how a confrontation that should have ended as a local skirmish developed into an uncontrollable ‘fierce all-out conflict’. It was the first victory in which the overarching principle running through the entire Bible—that ‘the house of David, chosen by God, would prosper, whilst the house of Saul would decline’—began to manifest itself in the actual course of the war.

David’s army overwhelmed the army of the Northern Kingdom of Israel led by Abner, which should have had the numerical advantage.

Abner proposed a duel as a political manoeuvre, but this was nothing more than human folly.

The account of how this escalated into an uncontrollable war illustrates the tragic reality of how easily human conflict can descend into a quagmire.

It seems to demonstrate once again that, no matter how convinced we may be that human methods will yield good results, ultimately there can be no reconciliation or harmony, only separation and rupture.

We should strive to cultivate humility and obedience, placing God first, rather than relying on our own thoughts, ideas, or abilities.

For God is a God who will surely grant whatever we seek within our relationship with Him.
