Gospel Reflections #1030: Being Devoted to God

Psalm 101:1–2 ‘I will sing of mercy and justice; I will sing praises to you, O Lord. I will declare your perfect ways. When will you visit me? I walk in my house with a pure heart.’

This is the opening of the ‘Psalm of the King’, in which David, as a ruler, vows to God his lofty ideal and resolve to ‘govern the nation and himself with integrity and justice’.

David sings earnestly not only of his conduct as a public leader, but also of the state of his heart within the privacy of his own home, away from public scrutiny.

‘Mercy (grace and love)’ and ‘judgement (righteousness and justice)’ are essential attributes of God’s governance of the world.

David declares that his forthcoming reign will be modelled on this ‘love and justice of God’.

Furthermore, he demonstrates a humble attitude, acknowledging that even as a king ruling over a nation, he bears full responsibility before an absolute being (God) who is greater than himself.

The ‘perfect way’ does not mean a way without flaws, but rather ‘being sincere and devoted to God, without deceit’.

David is setting his heart on the right path—how one ought to live.

And because he cannot walk this right path by his own strength alone, this is a prayer in which he deeply longs for God’s help and presence.

David expresses a firm resolve to remain sincere not only in his public persona—the face he presents before the people—but also in the privacy of his own home, where others cannot see.

For us too, true faith and character are demonstrated not merely by behaving correctly in places where others are watching (such as the workplace, church or social media), but by how we conduct ourselves in private moments and within our families, when no one is looking.

Furthermore, as ‘mercy’ and ‘judgement’ indicate, it teaches us the importance of not merely being lenient towards others, but of also possessing a sense of justice.

God’s will for us is that we should fully acknowledge that what He asks of us is impossible by our own strength alone; we must rely on Him, seek to obey Him, and cling to Him.

Our God is not telling us to accomplish everything perfectly through our own strength alone; rather, He continually speaks to us, urging us to rely entirely on Him.

In particular, when God gives us a new mission or a new challenge, we are first led to be humbled before Him and to begin by building a relationship of trust with Him.
