Gospel Reflections #1023: The victory was not due to their own strength

1 Samuel 30:24 ‘Whoever agrees with you on this matter: the share of those who stayed with the baggage must be the same as the share of those who went out to battle. They shall all share equally.’

This passage describes the moment when David, having recovered the spoils from the Amalekites, decreed that the spoils should be divided equally between the soldiers who had fought on the front line and those who had remained behind to guard the baggage.

It emphasises the unity and fairness of the community, stating that the grace of victory from God is bestowed equally upon all. 

When David’s party pursued the Amalekites who had plundered their families and possessions, 200 exhausted soldiers remained behind at the Besor Ravine.

Although only the remaining 400 actually took part in the battle, they achieved a resounding victory and succeeded in recovering the spoils.

Upon their return from battle, some of the 400 who had fought argued, ‘There is no need to share the spoils with those who did not go into battle.’

David rejected this selfish view and commanded them as in today’s scripture.

David understood that the victory was not due to their own strength, but to ‘God’s grace’, by which God had delivered their enemies into their hands and protected them.

Therefore, he decided that everyone who had contributed in their respective roles, regardless of the scale of their task, should receive an equal reward.

This incident symbolises the essence of service and reward in the Kingdom of God.

Victory (salvation or blessing) is not due to human merit, but to God’s grace.

Not only those on the front line, but also those who support from behind the scenes, play equally important roles within the community.

David established this principle of distribution not merely as a temporary measure, but as a ‘statute’ for Israel, making it a custom that would endure for generations to come.

This generous and fair decision became an event that demonstrated the excellent qualities (leadership) necessary for David to later become King of all Israel. 

We, too, often take credit for our own achievements when things go well, yet blame others when they do not.

I pray that the church may be moulded into a single body—a community of God—where we are conscious of our roles within that community, helping, complementing, supporting, sharing and rejoicing with one another.
