Gospel Reflections #1016: A Kind of Prayer

Psalm 6:5 ‘In death there is no remembrance of you; in the grave, who can give you thanks?’

This is the desperate cry of a poet facing the fear of death amidst serious illness and suffering, pleading, ‘I want to continue to worship God whilst I live.’ 

This passage does not set out a theological doctrine regarding the afterlife.

For the people of that time, ‘death’ meant the severing of fellowship with God and the loss of the privilege of praising Him on earth.

The psalmist is pleading with God, saying, ‘If I die, I will no longer be able to worship You or bear witness to Your glory to others. Therefore, please keep me alive.’ 

The psalmist is not praying merely out of self-preservation, simply because ‘I do not want to die’.

A distinctive feature of this passage is that it presents a powerful plea grounded in God’s glory, arguing that ‘keeping me alive will also benefit you (God), ensuring that the voice of praise on earth never ceases’.

Psalm 6 is considered one of the ‘Psalms of Repentance’ and begins with the psalmist in a state of extreme physical and mental exhaustion.

However, after confronting God with this reality of utter despair in verse 5 (or 6), the latter half (verses 8–10) shifts to a dramatic conviction that ‘the Lord has heard my prayer’.

Just as David did, it is important for us too not to hide our weaknesses, fear of death, or despair from God, but to lay them bare before Him just as they are.

To do this, we need to deepen our fellowship with God until we know exactly what kind of God we believe in and can be fully convinced of it.

Prayer is a time when we bring our reality, just as it is, before God; at the same time, it is a time to renew our understanding of reality from God’s perspective.
