1 Samuel 25:38 “‘About ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal, and he died.’
This passage describes the moment when Nabal, a wealthy man who was arrogant and did not fear God, ultimately lost his life as a result of God’s judgement.
This verse symbolises the spiritual teaching that it was ‘God Himself who passed judgement’, rather than David taking personal revenge.
David was enraged by Nabal’s insult and sought to take revenge with his own hands, but he was restrained by the wise intervention of Nabal’s wife, Abigail.
Nabal had become intoxicated by his wealth and was reveling in a great feast, but after hearing the situation from Abigail, it is recorded that ‘his heart turned to stone’.
The fact that he died ten days later signifies God’s final judgement upon his stubborn heart.
Through this incident, David learnt the attitude of faith: ‘not to take revenge himself, but to entrust it to God’s wrath’.
This became a vital foundation for his later reign as king.
We, too, have hearts as stubborn as Nabal’s.
God is at work, using every means possible, to break our hearts.
When we sense God’s work, we are led to look up to Him, unbound by our own emotions and preconceptions, so that we may be set free from our stubbornness.
Ultimately, we will experience God’s judgement, but Jesus will remain by our side as our Advocate, provided we do not reject Him.
